We currently have a great opportunity for a Senior Researcher to join the Interventional Research team within the CPRD Division. The post holder will work closely with staff across CPRD and will liaise with clients and external stakeholders.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research. The agency is made up of c.1300 staff working across three centres:

Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency regulatory centre (MHRA)
Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)
National Institute for Biological Standards and Controls (NIBSC)

CPRD, jointly sponsored by the agency and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), is the UK’s preeminent research service providing access to anonymised NHS data for research. CPRD services are designed to maximise the way anonymised NHS clinical data can be used to improve and safeguard public health. For more than 30 years data provided by CPRD have been used in a range of drug safety and epidemiological studies that have impacted on health care and resulted in over 2500 peer-reviewed publications. The UK is in a unique global position to use clinical records in novel ways for patient recruitment, clinical trials management and follow up. In addition to supporting high quality observational research, CPRD is developing world leading services based on using real world data to support clinical trials and intervention studies.

The Senior Researcher is responsible for supporting the use of real world anonymised patient data across the range of CPRD’s interventional research services. Responsibilities include defining and implementing standard methods and algorithmic approaches to data capture, transformation and export; undertaking complex data management tasks for interventional research studies and services; creating standard libraries of clinical concepts for use and re-use in studies and implementation within a technological service capability platform; and providing advice to clients in the application of CPRD data in clinical research. 

Key Responsibilities:

Undertake data management to support interventional research and clinical studies
Define and implement standard methods and algorithmic approaches to data capture, transformation and export
Create and implement a process for generating interventional research study data in a range of formats to align with client needs
Design and implement integrated standard data management capabilities within the CPRD interventional services platform
Create and validate clinical term codelists to ensure clear search parameters and to increase cohort search performance
Develop an interventional research publication pipeline and lead the writing of peer reviewed manuscripts relating to use of real world data in interventional research and contribute to research collaborations with academic organisations, observational researchers and other staff within CPRD
Work closely with colleagues across CPRD to support service delivery, share knowledge and standardise processes including governance and assurance. 
Engage confidently and professionally with stakeholders and clients both as a service provider and collaboratively to enhance the efficiency and quality of real world data interventional research

The successful candidate will:

Hold a PhD in epidemiology, medical statistics or a related discipline

Demonstrate proficiency in using epidemiological and statistical techniques with a solid understanding of research study design

Have extensive hands-on experience of data management and analysis using recognised data management and analysis software (for example, SAS, Stata or R)

Demonstrate experience in creating strategic algorithmic approaches to data management, characterisation and to add value to, or analyse, complex datasets.

Demonstrate excellent organisational skills, with a proven ability to manage and deliver multiple projects to target. Capable of working under pressure and making decisions with a high degree of autonomy when required.

Have good written skills, competent at producing high quality technical documentation. Track record of authoring peer-reviewed publications

Be a creative self-starter, solution focused, and able to demonstrate initiative and effectively deal with requirements to develop resources and services that meet client needs
