We currently have a great opportunity for a Systems Tester to join the Data, Tools, and Technology Team within the CPRD Division to work full on a permanent contract.


The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research. The agency is made up of c.1300 staff working across three centres:


Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency regulatory centre (MHRA)

Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) 

National Institute for Biological Standards and Controls (NIBSC)


CPRD, jointly sponsored by the agency and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), is the UK’s preeminent research service providing access to anonymised NHS data for research. CPRD services are designed to maximise the way anonymised NHS clinical data can be used to improve and safeguard public health. 


The CPRD Systems Tester role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the UK Government’s premier data-driven health research service, based on anonymised health records from over 50 million UK patients. We are seeking an individual who is experienced in quality assurance testing to lead, design, and deliver functional and non-functional tests to ensure that requirements for CPRD’s innovative products have been fully met.


Key responsibilities:


Investigate and analyse CPRD’s complex products and services and make informed decisions as to what the most appropriate tests should be.

Use Microsoft’s .NET stack to design, develop, and run re-usable test libraries upon which CPRD’s data collection and processing services, research applications, website, and APIs depend to ensure that quality is built-in to the delivery of code.

Develop, document and maintain functional test cases and other test artefacts like the test data, data validation, harness scripts and automated scripts.

Liaise with development team members to report on project progress against backlog item and user story tests.

Contribute to code reviews, collaborative development, and software quality best practice such as Test-Driven Development (TDD) and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) to demonstrate high levels of software assurance on completion of a project.

Work closely with members of the DTT team to ensure projects are undertaken within a collaborative team-based framework and to ensure new and existing products and services are of high quality before being made available to clients.


The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:


Degree or further education qualification in either a computer science or IT-based subject.  

Previous experience in a quality assurance tester role

In depth knowledge of using an object-orientated or scripting programming language, such as but not limited to .NET, Java, or Python, to develop re-usable test libraries.

Experience of using open source tools such as Selenium for front-end automation and RestAssured for API testing, and using a build automation tool, such as Maven or Gradle.

Track record of creating and executing manual, automated, and regression test scripts/scenarios and complex test data sets to accompany those scripts.

Creative self-starter, solution focused, able to demonstrate initiative and effectively deal with requirements ambiguity to develop pragmatic test solutions that focus on researcher needs

Good team player, working closely with colleagues to deliver organisational objectives. Self-motivated, with a strong sense of personal accountability, ensuring tasks, projects and issues are appropriately dealt with to their successful delivery or conclusion.
