An exciting opportunity exists within the Division of Virology for a scientist to join a team within the influenza group at NIBSC. The post is in the area responsible for (pre-)pandemic and zoonotic influenza related projects which include the development of pre-pandemic/zoonotic influenza candidate vaccine viruses, vaccine potency assay reagents and associated research.

A centre of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, The National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC) is a global leader in the characterisation, standardisation and control of biological medicines. NIBSC plays a major role in assuring the quality of biological medicines worldwide through the provision of biological reference materials, by testing products and carrying out research. Our expert scientists also provide advice on a routine basis and in response to emergencies.
Purpose of the role:
The post holder will be part of a team engaged in a variety of activities supporting these goals and will need to proactively interact with the rest of the influenza group, other areas of NIBSC, the WHO network and the wider influenza community.
The role will involve handling a wide range of influenza viruses, mainly those of pandemic potential and a significant proportion of work will be at containment levels 3 and SAPO4. The role will also involve downstream processing of in vivo experiments.
The successful candidate will have experience of virology and/or immunological techniques.
The candidate must be able to gain UK government security clearance at SC level
- Degree in microbiology or a related biological field or equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience
Skills & Experience:
- Proven graduate experience working in Containment level 2 laboratories
- Experience working in Containment level 3 laboratories desirable
- Experience working in Containment level 4 (UK SAPO4 or ACDP4) laboratories is desirable
